Description

In 2019 the JMP published a global baseline report  with harmonized estimates for water, sanitation, hand hygiene, health care waste management, and environmental cleaning (WASH) services in health care facilities. In 2020 the global database was updated and the JMP contributed to the WHO/UNICEF Global progress report on WASH in health care facilities: fundamentals first. In 2022, the JMP published a global progress update with a special focus on WASH and infection prevention and control (IPC).

The 2022 report found that:

  • Half of health care facilities (51%) had basic hygiene services in 2021. This means 3.85 billion people lacked basic hygiene services at their health care facility including 688 million people with no hygiene service at all.
  • Four out of five health care facilities (78%) had basic water services. 1.7 billion people lacked basic water services at their health care facility, including 857 million people globally with no water service.
  • There were not enough countries with national data to calculate regional and global coverage of basic sanitation, environmental cleaning and waste management services.

The global database will be updated again in 2024.
