Currently, about 4 billion people live in water-scarce regions and almost 1 billion people do not have access to safe drinking water. The World Economic Forum predicts that the world will face a gap of about 40% between water supply and demand if we do not change the way we operate (e.g. public water policy and technology).

In response to this challenge, the global water sector is undergoing a digital transformation, which is resulting in the adoption of technologies such as remote sensing (using sensors, satellites and drones), asset management (inventory and maintenance), customer engagement, predictive analytics (forecasting equipment failures), artificial intelligence, etc. This booklet explores some of the opportunities and challenges facing water utilities as they embark on the path of digitizing services.
