Title: Sector guide on water and sanitation in Senegal

Senegal is endowed with watercourses with a significant water potential capable of covering the population’s water demand. The Senegal River has a potential of 26 billion cubic meters per year and is the source of the Lac de Guiers, where the main water treatment plants are located. However, Senegal is faced with a galloping urbanisation of cities, creating a lack of basic social services, including access to drinking water and improved toilets. To address this challenge, the Government of Senegal made enormous progress in improving access to water and sanitation. The Millennium Drinking Water and Sanitation Programme was one of Senegal’s flagship programmes for achieving the Millennium Development Goals on water and sanitation. This document traces the progress made, the steps taken and the road still to be travelled to achieve SDG 6 in Senegal.
